Happy Thursday, everyone! And welcome to a new feature on Buried Under Romance and Love Saves the World.
What is Throwback Thursday?
Traditionally, Throwback Thursday celebrates nostalgia, asking participants to post a personal photo or an image from their past -- usually from 5 to 10 years ago. There are a lot of book blogs that also do a book-related Throwback Thursday.
The Historical Romance Edition:
Since Mary of Buried Under Romance and I are unapologetic lovers of historical romances, we've decided to focus on our beloved genre.
Here are our rules:
1. It must be posted on a Thursday.
2. It must be a historical romance novel published before October 3, 2008.
This week, I'm featuring my all-time favorite Julia Quinn book:
The Duke and I by Julia Quinn, published January 2000
Blurb:
Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town′s marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn′t as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry -- though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon′s heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!
I actually didn't start this series in order and The Duke and I was the last book I read in the series (I actually started with On the Way to the Wedding) -- and I remember just being swept up in the romance and conflict between Simon and Daphne. I thought Julia Quinn built up the tension so well in this story that, when Simon and Daphne have the final confrontation, it is an explosive moment. Quinn's current series is about the Smythe-Smiths who feature very prominently in the Bridgerton series. It's lovely to see glimpses of the Bridgertons in those stories. ^_^

ReplyDeleteThe Bridgertons is amongst my all-time favourite series! I've just finished reading The Sum of All Kisses and, although nothing ever tops the Bridgertons in my opinion, it still had all the romance, charm and humour that I love so much in Julia Quinn's books.

ReplyDeleteHi, Ki Pha! I love her works, too! But, like Carol, I think her Bridgerton series is her best work to date.
I love this book too! The Viscount Who Loved Me is my favorite JQ, but this is up there. The Duke and I was actually my first historical romance...it started the obsession! Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI love this book and I just adore Simon and Daphne. I also think that this series was Julia Quinn at her best. My ultimate favorite is actually Romancing Mr Bridgerton but this is in my top three from Julia Quinn, the other being The Viscount who Loved Me.
