Throwback Thursday: Historical Romance Edition (Year 2!)

Thank you to Shabby Blogs (http://shabbyblogs.com/) for the free frame!

Happy Thursday, everyone! And welcome to a new feature on Buried Under Romance and Love Saves the World.

What is Throwback Thursday?
Traditionally, Throwback Thursday celebrates nostalgia, asking participants to post a personal photo or an image from their past -- usually from 5 to 10 years ago. There are a lot of book blogs that also do a book-related Throwback Thursday.

The Historical Romance Edition:
Since Mary of Buried Under Romance and I are unapologetic lovers of historical romances, we've decided to focus on our beloved genre.

Here are our rules:
1. It must be posted on a Thursday.
2. It must be a historical romance novel published before October 3, 2008.

Silent Melody by Mary Balogh, published August 1997

Blurb:
Lady Emily Marlowe was beautiful, wild, and unspoiled. She could not hear or speak, though she listened with her eyes and answered with her smile. She was betrothed to a man who would have her as a pretty possession, a captive listener. But there was only one man for her—the dark and reckless Lord Ashley Kendrick, the childhood amour who inspired her fantasies—then left for India and found another love.

Seven years and countless dreams later, he returned to her, and love was born with a dance, a minuet that stirred her soul, a song so passionate it has no words.

I just finished reading Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt, which features a hero who lost his ability to speak. It's always interesting to read how authors will work their way around such a seemingly impossible situation -- in Mary Balogh's Silent Melody, her heroine is deaf and mute. How can Emily communicate with Ashley? How can a relationship develop when one side is unable to hear or speak? But I remember reading this and being impressed by how eloquently Emily moved and how clearly the author was able to narrate the encounters between Lord Ashley Kendrick and Emily.

  1. Oooo~ This sounds great. I haven't read many HR with characters that are either deaf or mute, let alone both! I have read some with blindness, either for half of the story or throughout it. They were very good.

    1. Hi, Ki!

Yeah, I've also read a lot of blind heroes and heroines, but it's rare to give your character deafness AND muteness, which was what drew me to this story. I thought Balogh placed such a big challenge on herself, but it turned out so nicely. ^_^

  2. I loved this one as well! It took me forever to get a copy of it and now I cherish the used one I found. I remember being impressed by how well Balogh depicted Emily and her ability to communicate with Ashley. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Me too! The copy I eventually got was very yellow and moldy, but I still read it because it's Mary Balogh. ^_^

It's out-of-print, sadly. But, I think the digital editions will be coming out soon. ^_^
