Since Thanksgiving was last November 22, I asked Robin about the things she is thankful for.

Here's what she wrote:

Five Things I’m Thankful For by Robin Danner

Thanksgiving is over, but ‘tis the season to give thanks and I dropped by today to let you know what I’m grateful for.

First off, of course, would be my family. My parents…well for the obvious reasons! Without them, I wouldn’t be here. So thank you, Mom and Dad, for feeling sexy that night and creating the wonderful miracle of life that is your daughter! (Insert cheeky grin here)

Secondly, I’m grateful for my husband, who came along and showed me everything that was missing from my life. He’s perfect for me in every way. And by that, I mean that he lets me win every argument and pretty much get what I want. Yep, I’m a spoiled wifey.

Which leads me to number three ... my three sons, whom I love more than life itself. They’re truly the best parts of us and I can’t wait to see what they become. And hopefully one of them will give me a granddaughter, so I can buy something pink just once in my life!

Next up would be my Oreo, my doggie who is now longer with us. I dreaded the day I would lose her and I never imagined it would be so soon. But it’s true what they say, her memory will live in my heart forever.

And last but not least, I am grateful for air conditioning. I know, I know. It’s not hot in November, but the memory of humid summer days in southeast Alabama is bad enough for it to remain in the forefront of my mind. I don’t know who is credited with the invention, but whoever you are, my hat is off to you!

So, that’s it. That’s what I’m grateful for. Although it would be remiss of me if I did not award a Honorable Mention. I’m soooo grateful that I escaped Walmart on Black Friday!

Happy holidays, everyone!

About the book --

Prince Talin’s trusted captain, Nadia, is ordered to abduct his brother, Prince Mathis of Isidor, and bring him to the wedding of Talin and the daughter of their family’s sworn enemy.

Loyalties are tested and enemies gather as Mathis and Nadia’s inescapable attraction threatens to bind the pair together.

Excerpt:
“Cold?” The prince’s hands came up to caress her arms.

Through the silk of the gown, she could feel the warmth that emanated from him. After a moment’s hesitation, she sighed and allowed him the familiarity.

“Look, it has begun.” He turned her in his arms and pulled her against him, wrapping his arms around her waist. His breath ruffled the curls at her temple.

Nadia sank into him, relishing the feel of his strong body behind her. She could hear the oohs and aahs from others in the garden, yet nothing could be more spectacular than the man who held her. She watched the fireworks with detached interest, choosing instead to savor her last moments with the prince. After tonight, she had to end this farce. The best she could hope for was to become his mistress, but if she did, her career would be destroyed. No man would take orders from her if he thought she was a whore. But she would allow herself this one night. One night to feel like a desirable woman.

Then she would return to reality.

The fireworks ended, and the voices began to fade as the crowd moved back inside, probably to continue dancing. She and Mathis were left alone in the garden. When he turned her in his arms, her breath caught. Moonlight streamed across his face, highlighting his elegant cheekbones and the regal slant of his nose. A hint of shadow had appeared on the line of his jaw. She traced it with her fingertips, smiling when it tickled her.

“Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?”

Review: One Naughty Night by Laurel McKee

Lily St. Claire has dreamed of getting the starring role in one of her family's plays and finally becoming a "true St. Claire" -- but a disastrous debut on stage prompts Lily to rethink her future and her place in her adoptive family.

Feeling sorry for herself, she does not notice the gentleman sharing the same back alley as she.

Aidan Huntington has never enjoyed being the second son of a duke. He has only felt the burden of it. Eager to escape the stifling atmosphere of London society, he plans to travel to the West Indies.

He sees the lonely, angry girl in the alley and can't help but respond.

Sparks fly, a kiss is shared and hasty goodbyes are made -- Lily and Aidan move on but never forget that one magical night.

Then it is three years later and Lily, now a widow, is helping out her brothers in their new business venture, a club called the Devil's Fancy. Aidan has also recently returned from his trip abroad and his father is asking him to look into a potential new investment.

When Lily spots Aidan form across the room, it is a bittersweet moment for her -- now she has discovered his true identity and he happens to be a Huntington, her family's most-hated enemy. Loyalty demands that Lily stay away but her heart tells her otherwise.

This story starts out really well. I loved the scene after Lily's debut as lead actress -- I love the instant chemistry between her and Aidan. That scene is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet's first meeting -- with the terrible discovery for Lily and Aidan delayed to three years later.

I am a bit confused about the conflict. McKee seems to have cast Lily and Aidan as "Romeo-and-Juliet/star-crossed lovers" and it surprised me to read that the Huntingtons don't feel the same enmity or rivalry towards the St. Claires!

Dominic caught her arm and gave her a little shake. "Just being a Huntington makes him trouble! They are all liars and cheats who care for nothing but their own lofty titles. They utterly ruined us once before -- they would o it again without so much as a blink."
- pp. 20-21

Throughout the story, it seemed a bit ridiculous when one of the St. Claires would remind Lily of the anger between their families and then to have the Huntingtons so blissfully unaware of this. (See pp 25-26 when Aidan and his father are talking about the gaming club and the impression I get is that they are not very well acquainted with the St. Claires.)

Lily seemed to have undergone a massive transformation in three years (and not for the better) -- in the prologue, she's young and carefree and eager to be on stage -- then is daring enough to share one kiss with a virtual stranger in the back alley -- years later, she is haunted, untrusting, world-weary and afraid of her "dark side" --

I couldn't connect with the hero and heroine's journey to love -- didn't see the deepening of the relationship. Their encounters were all a bit formulaic: reveal a bit about themselves, then have sex. (At this point, I have to mention that their encounters have very light BDSM elements as this is part of Lily's "dark" past.)

I wasn't so convinced of the "I Love You" at the end -- I didn't think Aidan and Lily had a lot in common outside of bed.

He hadn't come up here with the intention of having sex, but once they were alone in the darkness, once he touched her, kissed her, the need to have her overwhelmed everything else. When Lily was near him, all he could see, all he wanted, was her. She made him feel like a mere Neanderthal, dragging his woman back to his cave by her hair to drive himself into her again and again.
- p. 207

The story is too Lily-centric and Lily is a heroine with a lot of baggage:
1. Despite all evidence (and we see it in the story), Lily isn't convinced that she belongs in her adoptive family, the St. Claires. This really struck me as odd because all of her siblings love her and treat her well.

2. She is running from her "darkness" which she thinks she inherited from her mother, who was a whore in a "specialty" house which dealt with SM.

3. Then there's Handsome Tom Beaumont who "kidnapped" Lily after she ran away from the house of ill-repute and set her to work as a thief. Lily believes Tom's been dead all this while, so why does she see glimpses of him everywhere she looks?

Aidan and Lily are both kept busy dealing with Lily's problems that Aidan's own story isn't as well-fleshed out. There's a sweet moment between the two when Aidan reveals his hidden talent and passion (See Chapter 21) and I felt that was one true intimate moment between our hero and heroine -- but the next time his talent is highlighted is in the epilogue.

One Naughty Night is the first book in Laurel McKee's The Scandalous St. Claires series. The next book, Two Sinful Secrets will be released this December 2012.

About the book --

Blurb:
Throughout the Highlands she is known as Keely, the witch woman. She is a great healer -- a woman whose dreams come true. Ian MacPherson is a man who puts honor, loyalty and duty above everything. Their lives are entwined when Ian is sent by the Scottish King to bring Keely to trial for witchcraft. He is attacked and left for dead, but Keely rescues him. When he wakes, he discovers he has no memory. As he remembers his lost past, Ian finds that his need to protect the woman who has saved his life eclipses his duty to his king and country., He is a man torn between honor and duty to his country and the woman he loves.

Excerpt:
"You are not what you appear to be." Ian turned, speaking suddenly, surprising her. "Tell me. Who are you?"

Keely's past lay dormant, long forgotten. Now it all came rushing back, like a raging storm, crashing against her brain, leaving her shaking, chills dripping down her spine. She didn't want to tell Ian about her father, about the life she abhorred. Revealing the truth to him might not be wise. She had known from the first time she saw Ian, he could be an enemy. His intent toward her could be deadly.

Ian had a way of seeing into her soul. He stood by the window, his hands trailing over the French lace curtains. He was already asking more than she wanted to remember.

She might live in a small hut on the edge of a poor village, but her father had always taken care of her needs. He'd sent gifts on her birthday and men to stock her shelves with food.

Many times he'd requested she come to visit in hopes she would choose to stay with him. She always refused. She had never felt comfortable confined within the stone walls of his keep.

"I am exactly what I appear to be," she argued, knowing she would never be able to defend her statement. As Ian's memory returned, he would take note of the finery she possessed. The sheets on the bed were of the finest quality. Her gowns, although fashioned modestly, were made of material befitting the rich.

"I think not," he paused, watching the torrential rains pummel the earth and bolts of lightning brighten the horizon. While they stood in the tension-filled silence, hail began to beat upon the roof.

Review: Secrets of a Wedding Night by Valerie Bowman

Lily had one grand love affair in her life and it ended badly -- and she's been married and widowed and that also ended badly.

The Season is about to start and her younger sister, Annie, is about to make her debut and Lily doesn't understand what all the excitement is about -- she's been there and done it and it left her heart broken.

Then she reads an engagement notice in the newspaper: her former love has found a bride and she refuses to stand by and watch another girl risk heartbreak and disappointment -- so Lily pens an anonymous manuscript that details what awaits young brides after the wedding, and she called it "Secrets of a Wedding Night" --

When Devon's bride cries off, citing "Secrets of a Wedding Night" as the reason for her rejection, Devon vows to prove to the author that a wedding night could be delicious and delightful if it's with the right man and he plans to be the man to prove it.

Five years is a long time but it seems that what Lily and Devon feel have far deeper roots -- and they cannot help but experience the same tingle and excitement when they are together. But so many questions remained unanswered in their past -- and so many new questions beg to be answered in their present.

When interest in the identity of the author builds among the ton and a wager about Devon and Lily is made in the books at Brooks, Devon and Lily must figure out how to escape their scandalous situation without ruining Lily's reputation.

The story begins in medias res, Lily has written the manuscript and has sent a copy of Devon's fiance -- who then called off the engagement. Devon is knocking at Lily's door, demanding to speak to her after five years.

This was one of the best debut novels I've read this year.

What I love about it is how organic the development of the story is -- it moves and progresses naturally and it didn't feel like the author was heaping on plot twists and tropes with every chapter.

Considering that so much is happening, Bowman is able to present, quite clearly, the story she wanted to tell. Two characters who are wary of love and don't really believe in second chances -- but are still given another chance to find an ending to their story.

This is one of my favorite encounters in the story:

"You don't frighten me, Colton. I'll stay. But do not speak to me. I'd like some peace and quiet."

Her only answer was a puff of smoke and then, "It was both peaceful and quiet here before you arrived."

...

"How have we managed it, Colton? Five years in the same town without seeing each other?"

The smoke puffs stopped. "I've seen you. I just haven't spoken to you."

Lily smiled in the darkness. "The same for me," she admitted with a sigh.
- p. 78

I really just love how Bowman moves the story forward -- I kept on reading and reading, trying to find a good place to stop and then kept on reading some more -- I stayed up fairly late and ended up finishing this book in one sitting.

Secrets of a Wedding Night is Valerie Bowman's debut novel and the first book in her Secret Brides Trilogy. The second book, Secrets of a Runaway Bride (Annie's story) will be released on March 26, 2013.

Review: When You Wish Upon a Duke by Isabella Bradford

Charlotte Wylder has the bloodlines but not the title, money, or proper behavior for London Society.

March has the title, money, and proper behavior -- but not the bloodlines. The marriage arranged by the previous Duke and the late Earl (Charlotte's father) comes as a blessing for March, who has very little experience dealing with the opposite sex.

When March first meets Charlotte, he forgets all about propriety and the purpose of this marriage -- he falls in love with the unconventional, fun-loving Charlotte --

And Charlotte forgets her initial worries about marrying a complete stranger and falls in love with March, who makes her tingle with his touch and stolen kisses.

What should be happily-ever-after for March and Charlotte turns into a marriage of silence and tears as March realizes his "error" at bedding his wife so eagerly and passionately -- and poor Charlotte is too innocent to understand what she did wrong.

When You Wish Upon a Duke is the first book in Isabella Bradford's Wylder Sisters trilogy -- and Susan Holloway Scott's debut historical romance novel writing as Isabella Bradford.

In this novel, we see two young people struggle with their own needs and wants and what society expects of them. March grew up and lived his life fulfilling all that was expected of a duke. He avoided scandal and complications and always, always did what was proper and acceptable.

His ancestry haunts him -- his great grandmother was the mistress of the King and his bloodline traces back from that. Add to that, his title isn't old and esteemed -- and he longs for that sort of perfection.

Enter Charlotte Wylder, whose lineage traces back farther than March's -- but having been raised in Dorset has allowed Charlotte to enjoy a carefree life and she really isn't what society would expect of a duchess.

Bradford presents us with the question of need and want. March wants perfection -- but what he really needs is someone like Charlotte, who can show him the lighter side of life.

It is clear from the beginning that our hero and heroine are meant for each other -- the chemistry is there and they do everything in their power to contain their desire for each other. (But they still end up kissing in the mantua maker's shop. See Chapter 5.)

But the quest for perfection that March strives towards keeps him from enjoying his married life with Charlotte.

What is wonderful is seeing Charlotte's transformation throughout the novel. She begins as socially clumsy and inept, with her aunt constantly reminding her of how lacking she is in social graces. She struggles to find her place in London society.

Charlotte stood in the corner of the stone-paved path in the garden behind her aunt's house. After the wild gardens and fields of the old manor house in Dorset, this city garden seemed oppressively small and restrained, with tall brick walls on three sides and the house on the other. Everything was bound by geometric precision, with the neat stone paths crossing one another at perfect right angles, and every raised bed of flowers was so neatly trimmed that no leaves or tendril vines dared curl beyond their boundaries.
- p. 77

But as the story develops, Charlotte develops into a woman who is capable of speaking out, making her own decisions and standing up for herself. She grows and matures along with March.

March, on the other hand, is not as easy to like. He sometimes did a Jeckyl-and-Hyde with Charlotte -- sweet one minute and cold the next and I really felt bad for Charlotte.

But I understand that Bradford wanted to build an internal conflict in the Duke of Marchbourne and to show how he struggles with his own self-doubt and insecurity.

And I did love seeing glimpses of the unguarded March -- the March who wasn't over-thinking or over-analyzing the situation. And I'm glad that, in the end, he allows himself the freedom to be his true self.

A very good first book for Isabella Bradford. I am definitely curious about her next book. The second book, When the Duchess Said Yes was released last September 25 and the last book in the trilogy, When the Duke Found Love will be released this November.

Review: An Affair with Mr. Kennedy by Jillian Stone

All Zeno Kennedy wants is to keep the peace in London and to find evidence to identify the Bloody Four, a group of titled British gentlemen who are supporting the "Irish Question" --

All Cassie St. Cloud wants to do is to find a space of her own, away from her in-laws, so she can concentrate on her art. And she happens to find the perfect place, which happens to be the rooms beside Zeno's.

One of the suspected members of the Bloody Four is the new Earl of Rosslyn, Gerald St. Cloud and Zeno couldn't help but hope that there's a connection between his new tenant and the Earl.

Neither Zeno nor Cassie intend on pursuing any sort of relationship at this point in their lives and neither one count on being attracted to each other and, while most owner/tenant relationships are strictly hands-off and professional, Zeno's and Cassie's is anything but.

Zeno intended his acquaintance with Cassie to be part of his reconnaissance but he can't help but appreciate Cassie's wit, humor and allure. But as he gets closer to the truth about the Bloody Four, he puts Cassie's life in danger -- and now he races to save his country and his love.

When An Affair with Mr. Kennedy was released last year, I remember that it was very well-received and I was very intrigued by it -- I finally had the opportunity to get a copy earlier this year but it sat on my e-reader shelf for quite a while.

I'm glad to finally have had the chance to read it (thanks to the Reading Romances Challenge for last October) -- and I understand why this book (and this series) is very popular.

Jillian Stone is a refreshing new voice in historical romance -- Zeno and Cassie were very endearing characters and I fell in love with Cassie's family, the Erskines. (Such cool parents!)

Zak and Cassie's relationship develops in a very easy and "unrushed" way. The attraction is clear from the beginning and the progression towards the physical aspect happens without any fuss. Very seamless and organic.

And Stone's dialogue is amazing.

She tucked her arm in his. He took a long, appreciative glance at the lovely woman by his side. Indeed, she was stunning. This was the second time in so many days he wondered what she might look like in nothing at all. "You are entirely too distracting."

"What was that, Zak?"

He exhaled. "I'm having wicked thoughts about you."

She pressed sensuous lips together and a dimple emerged.

Halfway down the grand staircase he halted their descent. "Was that charming?"

A wonderful, slinky eye roll swept over him. "In a wolfish sort of way."
- p. 86

The way the author tackles the mystery of the Bloody Four and on the Irish Problem during the reign of Queen Victoria was also very well done. She takes a very objective stance and shows that Stone has done her research regarding one of the most defining political problems of the Victorian period.

As a debut novel, this one was a wonderful, fast-paced read and succeeded in introducing us to a new group of heroes: the Gentlemen of Scotland Yard.

An Affair with Mr. Kennedy is Jillian Stone's debut novel. This book was followed by A Dangerous Liaison with Detective Lewis. (I found the second book in a bookstore during my recent trip -- and I couldn't resist and bought a copy!)

Review: The Devil's Match by Victoria Vane (e-novella)

George Santayana said that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." After four years apart, Ludovic DeVere and Diana find themselves together again because of Vesta (their goddaughter) and Hew (DeVere's brother).

Four years has not diminished the anger and resentment they both feel after their last parting -- but it has also not diminished the attraction and desire either.

This is the fourth installment in Victoria Vane's The Devil DeVere series and provides the ending to DeVere and Diana's story. We have been teased about the history of these two from the first novella, A Wild Night's Bride and knew that it was inevitable that they would meet again after The Virgin Huntress and finally found out the details of what happened to them in The Devil You Know --

So where do our hero and heroine go from here? Back, of course. Because they have not learned the lessons of their past. And I love how Vane parallels the events of four years ago to now --

The engagement of Vesta and Hew take our characters back to Woodcote Park and to another horse race. And Diana still wants to rebuild her stables and needs the blunt to do so. And another wager is made.

Four years have proven that our hero and heroine still want each other. They never use the word "love" but their relationship reveals it. They are brighter, more animated versions of themselves when they are together. When they trade barbs and hurtle angry words at each other, you can feel the chemistry between the two of them.

"Your carriage, your form ... your scent," he answered. "They are all imprinted upon my brain. I would know you among a hundred women, Diana. Every time."
- p. 107

But it isn't all the same. Diana is older and wiser and more in control of herself -- she enters into this new "relationship" with DeVere on her own terms.

"No, my lord." Diana turned on him. "I shall come to you a promised, but it shall be at my own leisure."
- p. 88

The story takes a bit of a detour when Diana meets Salime (from a brothel) but I understand why it needed to be done. In their previous encounters, DeVere was the more knowledgeable one, the one in control -- Diana wants to take over the reins this time around.

I have to applaud Victoria Vane for a well-planned and well-written series of e-novellas. I loved the roller coaster of emotions from the lighthearted AWNB and the outrageous TVH before plunging us into the breathtaking (and heartbreaking) story of DeVere and Diana in TDYK --

The Devil's Match provides a satisfying conclusion to DeVere and Diana's story. (Fans of the series, don't despair! There's a 5th installment to the series and the author has also announced that she is writing a series of vignettes, which feature characters from The Devil DeVere series. Devil in the Making is the first vignette and is out now!)
